The pricing strategy for our fish is based primarily on the size of the fish, the bigger the fish the more time and effort has been put in to get it to that size and so the final price will be higher.

Another factor to consider is where the fish came from. Fish bred on site will be comparatively cheaper than those imported from mainland Australia which incur freight and inspection costs when imported into Tasmania.

Sizes quoted in our pricelists are expressed as TOTAL LENGTH which is the distance in mm from the tip of the fish’s nose to the tip of the tail. We break our pricing down according to five size classes or groupings which are expressed as fractions of the generally accepted adult size of the particular fish. The table below uses the Electric Yellow Cichlid as an example.

Fish: Electric Yellow Cichlid
Typical Adult Size: 125mm

FRY SMALL MEDIUM LARGE XL
15-20% 20-40% 40-60% 60-80% 80% +
20-25mm 25-55mm 50-75mm 75-100mm 100mm+

The fish we sell are guaranteed to exceed the lower end of the size range quoted for their pricing (these sizes appear on all in-store price labels). The majority of fish bred on site will be sold as “Fry” or “Small” fish.

Some of the fish we have are less common within the hobby and therefore will command a higher price.
